Acrylamide, the most important and simplest of the acrylamide family, has a wide range of applications, including as a raw material for organic synthesis and polymer materials. Its polymer is water-soluble, making it a flocculant used in water treatment, particularly effective for flocculating proteins and starches in water. In addition to its flocculating properties, it also exhibits excellent thickening, shear resistance, drag reduction, and dispersibility. As a soil conditioner, it increases soil permeability and moisture retention; as a paper filler additive, it increases paper strength, replacing starch and water-soluble ammonia resins; as a chemical grouting agent, it is used in civil engineering projects such as tunneling, oil well drilling, and plugging leaks in mines and dams; as a fiber modifier, it improves the physical properties of synthetic fibers; as an antiseptic, it can be used for the corrosion protection of underground structures; and in the food industry, as an additive, pigment dispersant, and printing and dyeing pastes. Combined with phenolic resin solutions, it can be made into a binder for glass fibers, and combined with rubber to create pressure-sensitive adhesives. It can be polymerized with monomers such as vinyl acetate, styrene, vinyl chloride, and acrylonitrile to produce many synthetic materials. It can also be used as a raw material for medicines, pesticides, dyes, and coatings.
